Already during her studies at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Belkis Ayón started with serious and respectful dedication to explore the most secret of the Afrocuban religions, the mythology of the Abakuá. While other artists dealt with Yoruba and Congo traditions easier to understand, she was the only one who turned towards the mysterious spiritual practices of this fraternity. As a woman being excluded from their ceremonies, she gained knowledge of the Abakuá particularly by studying books. Later on, when the artist was already renowned far beyond Cuba, she won the confidence of practising Abakuá who became her masters. Belkis Ayón has developed a special printing technique, the colography, with black and grey shades giving a relief-like texture and uncanny appearance to her pictures. The outstanding artist left on a journey without return in 1999, at the age of 32. Her fantastic artwork, her pictures of enigmatic beauty continue to live in exhibitions and collections all over the globe.

«A House in Bali» is an inspiring novel written in a lively style by Colin McPhee, the Canadian-American composer, musician and author who lived on the island from 1931 to 1938. He explored and wrote down the Balinese Gamelan music of distinct regions and eras and hence preserved it for future generations. Especially impressive is McPhee's participatory way to approach Balinese orchestras and musicians with whom he cooperated respectfully on a basis of equality, a behaviour far from being self-evident back in those colonial times. In 2015, McPhee's fascinating novel finally appeared in German, translated by Ines Anselmi.
